Lady Gaga body-shamed for Super Bowl outfit (computer art)

The Super Bowl 2017 Pepsi Halftime Show was definitely full of surprises; Lady Gaga opened her performance with a patriotic rendition of “This Land is Your Land” and “God Bless America,” and then suddenly dived off of the stage she had been performing on. What happened next could only be described as an action-packed show, filled with hits like “Poker Face,” “Born this way,” “Telephone,” “Just Dance,” “Million Reasons” and “Bad Romance.”

But for a singer who preaches “rejoice and love yourself today, baby you were born this way,” it must have been really shocking to discover that fans had only negative things to say about her body after her performance.

People all over the internet were saying downright horrible things, like Nathan, @negans_swing, who tweeted, “Tried to enjoy @ladygaga’s performance, was distracted by the flab on her stomach swinging around #SuperBowl.” NASCAR Guy, a.k.a. @MegaDriver86 chimed in as well, “Whoever designed Lady Gaga’s final outfit shouldn’t have let her expose her belly. It wasn’t flattering. #SuperBowl #PepsiHalftime.”

Frankly, performers of the Super Bowl halftime show have two purposes only: to sing, and to entertain their audience in some way. They’re not hired to be attractive to “MegaDriver86.” Super Bowl viewers everywhere need to understand that performers don’t owe it to anyone to look good at all times.

In the past, Super Bowl performers have worn similar outfits to Gaga’s 2017 one. Remember Katy Perry’s revealing two-piece red, yellow, white and blue dress during her halftime performance in 2015? Or Beyonce’s black romper with the plunging neckline in 2013? It’s unfair that Lady Gaga can’t show off her body like these past performers without getting tons of hate.

Gaga then completely shut down all of the body-shamers out there February 7 on her Instagram: “I heard my body is a topic of conversation so I wanted to say, I’m proud of my body and you should be proud of yours too. No matter who you are or what you do. I could give you a million reasons why you don’t need to cater to anyone or anything to succeed. Be you, and be relentlessly you. That’s the stuff of champions. Thank you so much everyone for supporting me. I love you guys. Xoxo, gaga.”

Take a tip from Gaga and be body-positive to everyone this year.
