Ruben is a district champion in her individual events and is looking forward to possibly placing at states this year. “Taleah is also currently positioned to be the district champion in her individual events; which if she becomes the district champion, would guarantee her a place at the state meet,” said Coach Mr. Greg Shuettler.”

The Schuylkill League Championships were held at Blue Mountain this year. “It was satisfying to win the league after training throughout all of high school, it was important to the team as well as my teammates to bring it home,” said senior Mark Ritschel.

Stage band rehearses every Tuesday from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the bandroom. Some songs the students are playing include Moanin’, Higher Ground, Don’t Get Around Much Anymore, and Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing, and more to come. Junior Angelina Madonna said, “I think people should join stage band because it gives everyone an opportunity to play a different genre of music that is really fun. I hope to become a more skilled player.”

The PAHS art show is normally an in-person show held at John S. Clarke. Despite it being virtual, students were still eager to submit their various artwork pieces. “I am a little sad that there isn’t an in person show, but I’m glad that there’s still something going on. The art students deserve to show off the works that they’re proud of. I submitted a landscape painting because I really liked how the colors turned out,” said senior Meg Burns.

The cast of Cinderella stands proud during the closing scene of the musical. It was held in the PAHS auditorium on April 23, April 24, and April 25. “Our students really give their heart and souls to this performance. There was an added level of precautions to worry about with the pandemic, and honestly, I went into the season expecting it to be very different. However, despite low numbers of cast, crew. and put, this whole company was committed to excellence and Cinderella has been one of the most beautiful productions we have ever done, I am so very proud and eternally grateful,” said drama director Maria Malek.

Social Video Club had a meeting last Wednesday at Crimson House. They talked about how much their hourly rate should be, club officers, and the recruitment of new members. “I really think that this is something Schuylkill County has been long overdue with, this country is full of diversity and this is a great way to show it,” said sophomore Haven Jacob Guistes.

While the board meeting was held in the middle school auditorium, they also live streamed it on Facebook for anyone who wanted to join. They voted to end the hybrid cycle. Principal Tiffany Hummel said, We are looking forward to welcoming many of our students back to full in-person instruction while still offering a virtual alternative. We are working behind the scenes to plan for our students return next month.

In the picture above, Bobby Walchak is seen in a Penn State and Pottsville uniform. Bobby’s family believes that he’ll do great the upcoming football season for Penn State. “I am ecstatic over Bobby being offered to play football for what I believe is one of the top college football teams in the country. It shows that hard work pays off. I believe Bobby will represent his family and Pottsville well. We are proud beyond words. I think Bobby has a gift to play football, I have seen it at a young age and how he developed over time confirms my belief in his talent. Bobby will continue to work hard, and it will only be a matter of time until the coaches at PSU will reward his hard work with an opportunity to get on the field and do what he does, which is making game changing plays,” said Bobby’s father, Bob Walchak.

Pictured above are the five runners up from Winter Carnival 2019. After the pageant was over everyone who participated were allowed to celebrate the new winners at St. Nicholas Hall with friends and family. “I’m honestly so disappointed that Winter Carnival was canceled. It’s completely unnecessary to take away all of the fun things that you can only experience so many times during high school. First winter prom and now this, it’s just so frustrating and uncalled for. You could easily take precautions and still continue with doing the pageant. I know of so many girls that were looking forward to it, even I was and I’m not even allowed to run this year. It was my favorite opportunity that I received my junior year and being named Miss Congeniality was something so special to me. The memories I made with all of my friends were unforgettable and to have a once in a lifetime chance to participate as a junior being taken away just upsets me,” said senior Greta Snukis.

If a person couldn’t see their family members in person, they had the option of FaceTiming them or talking to them in during a zoom call. Senior Greta Snukis said,“Every year at almost every holiday, my cousins and I get a photo in front of my aunt’s door. My cousin, Allie, was unable to attend our celebration because of her being in a different state. So we put her on FaceTime and found a way to still get the photo.”

Spotted lanternflies are seen roaming around on the grass. Along with trees, these flies also kill crops. “They are a terribly invasive species, and they ruin our crops, it’s crazy, but also kind of hilarious that Pennsylvanians have collectively declared open season on them,” said senior Lily McDonald.

The Roller Roost Sports Arena opened with a maximum of 250 people allowed to enter mid September. Although any age can come, students from the middle school show up the most. “I think they remodeled it well and it looks really different, but good. I enjoy going there because it’s a fun place to hangout with friends,” said eighth grader Allegra Hossler.

The Pottsville Area High School football team was pumping before their game against Minersville. This year is the first year without any spectators attending because of COVID-19 regulations. “Well honestly it’s still kind of a bummer that we can’t have everyone at the games but other than I think I’m kinda used to it for now. These past few games I think we showered everyone that we can bounce back from a devastating loss, there were a few mental mistakes but we came back, ROLL TIDE,” said junior Travontai Davis.

Students in the student section cheered the varsity football team on to victory during the 2020 football season. COVID-19 has turned spectating sports virtual instead of attending in person. “Football Fridays were some of the best nights of my life, I miss going to the games after a long week of school and cheering the team on in the student section. The whole school comes together and we have a great time there. Definitely something I miss about high school,” said graduated student Clayton Demcher.

With news of the Roller Roost II closing, many people were upset. Most of their them spent part of their childhood in the skating rink. I had fun when I was a kid there. I spent my birthday parties there, so closing means that kids wont get to experience the fun parties and great memories, said Sophomore Makayla Sheraradin.

The Quiz Team took a trip to Penn State Schuylkill to compete with other schools, and got second place. After the tournament ended, adviser Ms. Hobbs took them to McDonald’s. “It was really fun, and I enjoyed the McDonald’s,” said senior Noah Fredericks.

Kaylee Becker works above and beyond in every class she takes. Becker is grateful to have her application approved for the Women in Science and Engineering Forum. “I put a lot of time into my application to the STEM Forum dinner, so when I found out that I had been accepted, I felt accomplished. I definitely look forward to being able to hear from other women in the field that I want to work in someday,” sophomore Becker said.

Kobe Bryant was an inspiration to many people. His dedication to the game of basketball will be forever remembered. “Kobe Bryant has impacted the game of basketball for me by giving all of his love, dedication, and commitment to the game. His commitment and dedication isn’t just a game, it’s a lifestyle. The passing of Kobe, his daughter Gigi, as well as the others will always remind me to cherish what I have because it could end any day,” said freshman Tayla Jones.

He is someone that everyone should want to be friends with and will always be there for you,” said freshman James Malek.

Senior Hattie Ebling, senior Halia Bachman, and sophomore Jenisis Rodriguez will be competing in the DECA state competition after they placed well in the district competition on December 6. If each win states, they will make it to the national competition in Nashville, Tennessee. “Although I am very sad that this is my last time competing, I can’t wait to go to states and compete in February at the Hershey Lodge,” said Bachman.

Swimming and diving practices occur for up to three hours. It is evident that the swim and dive team put all of their effort into practice. “I always have the chance to try new, crazy dives that I have never attempted before. Sometimes you smack, hard; but the pain is only temporary. It’s all worth it when you finally get the satisfaction of getting the new dive,” junior Owen Golden said.

The Gabriel Youth Orchestra celebrates their 10 year anniversary. This group is one of the only orchestras in Schuylkill County. “Orchestra is a great opportunity to meet people from Schuylkill County that care about music just as much as you, and you are bound to learn many important lessons about music and life,” said sophomore Crystal Mease.

Graduate John Hannaway was diagnosed with cancer on November 4th, 2019. Yet, he never lost his positive attitude. “Going into the surgery, I was extremely scared, but I was comforted by the number of prayers and support I received from my Pottsville family. Knowing I had such a large support system made every step of the way so much easier,” Hannaway said.
