Senior Lauren Hunter won the Widener University “Leadership award for courage”. This  scholarship was open to juniors from Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey, and around 200 juniors applied. With her win, Hunter received $20,000 from Widener University.

The award ceremony took place March 23 at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. The university provided the winners with a certificate and a brunch, followed by many pictures.

Hunter heard about the award from Mrs. Mary Beth Conville, school counselor, who chose her for it. The counselors were searching for someone who is a leader and takes charge to change something for the better. Hunter was chosen because she is a leader in her faith.

“Wear your faith like a badge,” Mrs. Conville said.

Since Hunter will not be attending Widener University, she cannot do much with her award. She can only use it at another school by getting that school to match it.

“I am extremely blessed and humbled by being recognized by our staff. I am extremely passionate about my faith and want to display Christ’s love through everything that I do, but I never thought it would win me an award,” Hunter said.

She shared tips for other students looking for scholarships.

“Be involved in your community and school. If you aren’t happy with something, be the one who changes it and be proud of who you are,” Hunter said.
