Imagine how you would feel after training so hard every day of the season to accomplish an immense goal. This is how senior Michael Smerlick felt after finally scoring his 1,000th point for the boys’ swim team at the January 12 swim meet at Mahanoy Area.

“I have been swimming for five years, and [I have been] on swim team for the past four years,” Smerlick said. “I enjoy how everyone [on the team] works together as a team and it’s not just an individual sport.”

Smerlick swims the the 200 and 100 freestyle. He achieved his 1,000th point while competing in the 200 freestyle; he swam the event in 1:58.42. His win also boosted the team’s overall score.

“I will be given a plaque, but I’m honored to receive the 1,000-point award and thank my team and coach for pushing me to get there. I’m really looking forward to setting a relay record,” Smerlick said.

Smerlick plans on furthering his swimming career in his future. He plans on participating in the swim team if he attends Albright College or Susquehanna University.
